About Us
In Alaska, 42 to 46 percent of pregnancies are unintended. In the United States, 57 percent of pregnancies are unintended. The rate is highest among the young, the unmarried and the poor. Of the unintended pregnancies in this country, nearly half (47 percent) end in voluntary abortion. Fetuses that are brought to term are more likely to suffer the effects of poor maternal health and nutrition.
The Alaska Emergency Contraception Project, a project of the Alaska Pro-Choice Alliance, aims to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies by increasing access to emergency contraception (EC).
The Alaska Emergency Contraception Project was formed in 1998 to provide information to Alaska women and their health care providers. It is affiliated with the the Northwest Emergency Contraception Coalition and the Alaska Pro-Choice Alliance.
Alaska is one of eight states allowing women of all ages to purchase EC without a prescription at certain pharmacies.
Through the Alaska Emergency Contraception Project, Alaska caregivers and pharmacies can find the resources they need to distribute emergency contraception to women and to educate the public. Downloadable forms and Powerpoint presentations are offered on the provider page of this site. See the For Providers link.
An extensive list of agencies with more information can be found on the resources page.
