A resolution was passed in an amended form at the Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association House of Delegates in June 1999 in Chicago. The AMA policy now reads:

Emergency Contraception Pills

"Resolved, that our AMA support public health education on all forms of contracpetion, including emergency contraception pills (ECPs), by working in conjunction with the appropriate specialty societies and other organizations to encourage the widespread dissemination of this
information."

Additional testimony stressted that emergency contraception does not provide protection against sexually transmitted disease (STD). Hence, education about contraception should cover both the need to provide protection against STD's and unintended pregnancy.

Another resolution which relates to the ECP issue was introduced by the ACOG also passed at the AMA A-99 meeting of the HOD.

It reads:

Prescription Compliance by Pharmacies

"Resolved, that our AMA work with appropriate professional societies, legislative and regulatory bodies to assure the pharmacies who restrict certain classes of drugs from their inventory notify patients of such restrictions, and offer to refer the patient to other pharmacies."

The report from the reference committee stated:
"Testimony was overwhelmingly supportive for this resolution. The principle concern addressed by this resolution was the growing number of pharmacies refusing to stock inventories of certain classes of drugs (e.g.
emergency contraception or "morning after pill") for which they have been licensed."

A resolution was passed in an amended form at the Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association House of Delegates in December 2000 in Orlando.

It read:

Access to emergency contraception

Adopted as amended CMS Report 1, which asks the AMA to support making emergency contraception pills more readily available, including a decision to support and monitor the application process of manufacturers filing for over-the-counter approval of the drugs with the FDA. However, the report also asks the AMA to reaffirm that no physician or other health professional be required to perform any act that violates their moral principles.
